AUSTRALIA DAY CONCERT
26 January 2012 (7:00 pm) – Sidney Myer Music Bowl
“WHAT’S IN YOUR SUITCASE?”
“A suitcase made in China, a suitcase within a suitcase,
a suitcase full of joy, a suitcase FOB (Fresh off the Boat),
a suitcase all the way from Equatoria the state of Sudan filled with Shakespearean books, a suitcase smuggled through customs with a goat in it – All true stories about what makes up Australia today. What’s in your suitcase?”
2012 AUSTRALIA DAY CONCERT ONCE AGAIN PROMISES TO BE AN EXTRAVAGANZA.
This summer will mark the 9th official Australia Day concert for Australia Day on January 26, 7 pm by Peter Mousaferiadis. A new feature to this year’s concert is the location at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The show themed “What’s In Your Suitcase?” brings over 500 performers together exploring the metaphoric element of the suitcase.
All elements of the creative landscape will be brought together for a grand display of music and performances. These include a drum and percussion spectacular led by Sergei Golovko, Director of the Australian Percussion Academy. Jonathon Welch, also known as the CHOIR Man and Adam Przewlocki will conduct a mass choir of 250 people.
Magicians, puppeteers, jugglers and community groups will also take stage in this spectacular concert. A massive 60 square metre suitcase designed by Gary Friedman will double up as a shadow screen to reinforce the themes and songs of the concert. The audience will be encouraged to sing along with the choir to favourite Australian songs which will culminate in the traditional Australia day fireworks.
Creative Director Peter Mousaferiadis developed the Australia Day concerts concept to be an event celebrating all things Australian. Past concert themes have included Creation Stories of the World, Bovines, Bunjil the Eaglehawk, Drums, Guitars, Horns, The Way of the Bagpipe and Stories of Migration. This year’s theme of the suitcase symbolizes both the journeys that people undertake and the ‘baggage’ that we carry with us from experiences and relationships.
“I feel proud to be Australian! It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to bring diverse communities together through this spectacular performance and share their stories to keep their heritage alive!”- Peter Mousaferiadis.
This year’s Australia Day Concert is funded by VicHealth’s “Arts About Us” Program which aims to reduce ethnic and race based discrimination through the arts.
This Concert is FREE for all audiences to enjoy. Be sure to secure your spot at The Sidney Myer Music Bowl by arriving early for what promises to be a dazzling extravaganza.
